Students take Phil Wilson MP on tour of local Anne Frank exhibition

Phil Wilson MP made a special visit to Greenfield Community College in Newton Aycliffe to see the Anne Frank exhibition; a travelling outreach exhibition from the Anne Frank museum in Amsterdam.

Year 9 students, who have been specially selected to act as ambassadors, gave Mr Wilson a tour of the exhibition. Knowledgeable and passionate the students reflected upon the story of Anne Frank, answering many of Phil’s questions about her life.

Speaking with the year 9 Ambassadors, Phil congratulated them on their fantastic knowledge, saying “You have done a tremendous job. It is obvious you have all spent a great deal of time and worked hard studying Anne Frank closely.”

The exhibition comes at a poignant time. Across the world millions of people are seeking refuge due to war, therefore Greenfield school has encouraged student to not only learn about the story of Anne Frank, but to interpret it for themselves.

In approaching the exhibition in their own unique way, Greenfield has asked students from across the school as well as local primary schools to contribute to the exhibition, with a local artist on hand to help them interpret the work.

Phil praised the school for their work on the exhibition, commenting that “It is important to keep the memory of what happened all those years ago alive. It is the job of my generation and the next generation to ensure that we never forget the atrocities of what happened under the Nazi regime.”

The exhibition will be open to the public until Wednesday 27th January.

A celebration of all the work the Ambassadors have done will be held on Holocaust Memorial Day 27th January at the Greenfield Gallery.
