It’s important that my constituents are kept up to date with what I am getting up to in the constituency so every two weeks I will be posting a round up of some of the highlights.
This week I spent some time in Aycliffe visiting community groups, raising awareness of food poverty and meeting with members of the public
The Aycliffe festival held 10 days of community activities that happened all across the town. Activities ranged from kids clubs, church services, concerts, coffee mornings dancing and disco’s. I was able to get along to a few things and was really encouraged to see such great turns out and local support for the event.
It is always a great honour to get out and meet the many people doing great things in my constituency. At the Aycliffe community fair, I had the opportunity to meet over 40 different individuals, groups and organisations. I met a leather tanner selling beautiful belts, a decoupage artist making boxes, charities helping people in need, SSAFA were there who help families of people in the forces and many many more people. I couldn’t help but feel proud to see what fantastic people and activities we have happening within the town.
Following the fair I popped over to the coffee morning at St Clare’s church and met the wonderful volunteers who give up their time every week to support community activities. I also had a very nice tea and scone.
It’s important to know what issues our residents may be facing and so I conduct regular street surgeries and door-knocking sessions. This week we went to St Pasture and met a lovely bunch residents
Food Bank Collection
It is disappointing to me that the number of people in food poverty is growing. It is important that this is tackled. Policy must change to get money into people’s pockets, better paid jobs, longer hours and a fairer benefits system would help, but we can’t forget the immediate need. I was happy therefore to be able to help Tesco collect food for our foodbanks in Durham. I hope this will help people in my constituency who find themselves without food and unable to eat.
